  • The Rules for 7 card stud hilo at online poker rooms

7 card stud hilo rulesSeven Card Stud Hi-Lo is played the same at every online poker room. The same can not be said for home poker games though. This is why it is extremely important for new Stud Hilo players to be sure that they know the proper rules before they sit down at a real money table. This article covers the rules of Seven Card Stud H/L, as it is played online. I will start off explaining how the ante's work. Antes in Stud Hl are forced bets that each player must put in to the pot in order to be deal in the hand. This is the only aspect of Stud HL that can vary from room to room. I will use the ante/bring-in system used by Pokerstars since they are the #1 ranked room for 7 Card Stud Hi-Lo. Before I go any further I should provide some links to our Stud HL strategy articles. You should take a look at each after reading this article.

Antes In Seven Card Stud High Low

As I mentioned above I will use the ante and bring-in formula used at Poker Stars. The ante is usually 10% of the lower of the table stakes. If you are playing at a $1/2 Stud HL table, the ante would be $.10. After the ante's are put into the pot, which happens automatically at online poker rooms, when you click on the "auto post" option, each player in hand will receive three cards. Two of the cards will be dealt face down, and only you can see them. These are called hole cards or down cards. The third card will be dealt face up, and everyone can see it. This card and the 3 that will follow are known as up cards. The player with the lowest ranked card will be forced to put the bring-in in the pot. The bring-in is an opening bet that usually equals 50% of the small stake amount. In the example above ($1/2), the bring-in would be $.50. the action will then go around the table starting from that player. You will be bale to fold, call or raise when the action comes to you. Here is a recap for those of you who are just browsing this article.

    • Ante - The money each player must put in the pot to be dealt in. In Stud Hilo, the ante is usually 10% of the small stake, here are some examples: $1/2 = $.10 ante, $5/10 = $.50 ante. $20/40 = $2.00 ante.
    • Bring-in - The bring-in in Stud Hi-Lo is one half of the table's small stakes. The player that has to put in the bring-in is the player with the lowest upcard. Here are some examples: $1/2 = $.50 bring-in, $5/10 = $2.50 bring-in, $20/40 = $10 bring-in.

    4th Street - 5th street - 6th Street & 7th street

4th street in 7 Card Stud Hi-Lo is what people call the period when you have two hole cards and two upcards. During this round the minimum and maximum bet is the table's small stakes. Players can opt to raise though, up to 4 times. After the betting is finished the dealer will deal another up card, this is called 5th street. This is when the min/max bet is the high table stakes amount. For instance, in $1/2, the bet and raise amount is now $2 instead of $1. You will have the option to bet once again and each player will receive his 4th and final upcard, then another round of betting. The final card (7th street) is deal face down, giving you 3 hole cards and 4 upcards.

What is the objective in 7 card stud hilo?

I suppose I should have covered this first. You have two objectives in 7 card Stud HL. You either want the lowest hand or the highest hand. The best scenario is having both the lowest and highest hand, thus winning the entire pot. To qualify for the low hand you must have 5 cards that are eight or lower. There is no requirement for the high hand. Here is an example hand:

    • Player 1: 2h-4s-8d-10h-3s-10d-6h - Low hand: 23468 - High Hand: Pair of 10's
    • Player 2: Kh-5c-Kc-3h-9c-7d-Qs - Low Hand: N/A - High Hand: Pair of Kings
    • Player 3: 2s-3c Ah-5d-5h-2c-8s - Low Hand: A2358 - High Hand: Two Pair (2's & 5's)

In the example above Player 3 would win the entire pot. This is called scooping in Seven Card Stud Hi/Lo. Obviously his two pair beats Player 1's pair of 10's and Player 2's pair of Kings. He also wins the low pot because he has a lower hand than Player 1, and player 2 didn't qualify for the low hand. Player 1 and Player 3 each have an 8 high low hand but Player 3's next lowest card is a 5, which is lower than Player 1's next lowest card; 6. This is how the low hand winner is determined in 7 Card Stud HL. A hand like A2345 or a hand that has 5 cards 8 or less, and a flush, are excellent scooping hands.
